Why Install Gutters

Let’s be honest…gutters aren’t the most exciting aspect of your home. Really, they’re kind of like vegetables: You know you need them, but there are so many other things you’d like to have instead. That’s why most people seldom give the idea of installing gutters a second thought until a problem has already developed. Gutters in Dallas, or in North Texas in general is an absolute must. In fact, more than one third of our clients come to us at the advice of foundation repair companies who have advised them that gutters are going to be their most important step in improving their foundation troubles.

So, for those of you who need convincing, here are three reasons why your home needs gutters.

Foundation Damage

Foundation problems are by far the most common reason people decide to install gutters in Dallas. Repairing a failing foundation can cost as much as $15,000, and most homeowners aren’t aware a problem is developing until the damage has already become evident, at which point it’s much too late for a simple remedy.

Cracked Brick

Without gutters, the roof, which collects huge amounts of water, dumps water down right next to your foundation causing soil washout and water-pooling in the exact areas where you do not want them to occur.

To give you an idea of just how much water is being dumped near your foundation, take a typical 2,000 sq. ft. house and multiply its roof area, let’s say 2,500 sq. ft., by 0.6 for every inch of rainfall. So, in May, the average rainfall in the Dallas area is right at about 6 inches. That would be over 9,000 gallons of water (2,500 X 0.6 X 6) which the ground near the foundation must deal with in May alone.  Clearly, such a barrage of water constantly beating down near your foundation will take its toll over time.

Wood Rot

Rotted wood occurs no less often. Such problems normally take place on the eaves and overhangs or on the lower pieces of siding caused by water splashing back up from the ground. Worse yet, when your gutters are installed improperly, that can make matters even worse than if you had no gutters at all.

Rotted Fascia]

As you can imagine, replacing the soffit and fascia on your home then having to repaint all the new wood (which usually results in painting the entire house) is no small project, and by no means cheap, not to mention any siding which may need replaced. The price tag on such a project can easily rival even the cost of foundation repair.

Damage To Landscape

Without gutters, the water pretty much pours off your roof at will, with no regard for what’s below. Anything in its path can quickly become a casualty. Gutters bring some order to the chaos, intercepting those thousands of gallons of water and safely directing them to their designated downspouts, rather than allowing the water to wreak havoc on those flowers you spent so many hours and/or dollars planting.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of homeowners are reactive rather than proactive in dealing with the above mentioned problems, and gutters become a form of damage control to an already well-established problem. But, knowing that your home is not exempt from such things, why not beat it to the punch and prevent the damage from occurring in the first place? Don’t throw your money away fixing problems that could otherwise be prevented. Invest in gutters to protect your investment and put those concerns behind you.
