5-Inch or 6-Inch Gutters?

Gutter size comes down to the roof. The steeper the roof and the more valleys it has, the faster water reaches the gutter and the more of it arrives in one spot.

Most newer homes in DFW, like the ones across Frisco, Allen and McKinney, have steep, cut-up rooflines with a lot of valleys. Those roofs generally need 6-inch gutters. A 6-inch gutter is only an inch wider, but it's rated to handle roughly 40 percent more water. Put a 5-inch gutter under a big valley and a hard Texas rain overruns it. The water goes over the front edge and lands where you least want it, against the foundation.

Older homes with lower, simpler roofs, like much of Richardson, North Dallas and the older parts of Plano, usually do fine with 5-inch. Randy looks at the roof before he recommends a size.

Downspouts

A gutter is only as good as the downspouts draining it. Too few, or too small, and the gutter fills faster than it empties, no matter how well it's hung.

Six-inch gutters get 3x4 downspouts. Five-inch gutters usually get 2x3, and we can run 3x4 downspouts on a 5-inch gutter when a section needs to drain faster. A 3x4 moves about twice the water a 2x3 does.

Where the water goes at the bottom is your call: splash blocks or downspout extensions that carry it away from the foundation.

Roof Valleys and Splash Guards

Where two roof slopes meet, water comes off in a stream instead of a sheet, and it can shoot right over a gutter. We add splash guards wherever water concentrates: under valleys, and anywhere else the roof sends more water than a straight run of gutter would see.

Rotted Fascia Gets Replaced First

Gutters hang on the fascia board. If the fascia is soft, new gutters get screwed into wood that won't hold them, and the rot keeps spreading behind the metal where you can't see it. When we find rotted fascia, we replace it before the gutter goes up. That carpentry is our own work, not something you have to line up separately. More on our soffit and fascia repair.

Gutter Guards and Leaf Protection

A gutter full of leaves isn't a gutter. Water tops the edge and drops against your foundation, which is exactly what the gutter was there to prevent.

We install gutter guards and screens that let water in and keep debris out. A house under live oaks needs different protection than one on a bare lot, so we match the guard to the trees rather than to a package — and the system gets cleared before protection goes on, since guards over a clogged gutter just seal the clog in.

Gutter Colors

Gutters run along every roofline on the house. In the wrong color they read as hardware bolted on; in the right one they disappear into the trim.

When Gutters Need Replacing

Seamless gutters are formed on site in one continuous piece for each run, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts. Fewer joints, fewer places to leak.
