When a board has rotted once, the spot it's in is a wet spot. Putting the same wood back means the same problem later. Where it makes sense, we recommend James Hardie siding and trim, which don't rot. If you'd rather match the existing wood, we'll do that, primed and painted.
A few rotted boards can be cut out and replaced. When a whole wall of Masonite is swelling, patching only buys time, and it's worth talking about Masonite siding replacement. Randy will tell you honestly which one you're looking at.
If you're about to paint, this is the time. Rotted wood gets replaced during prep, before the first coat goes on, so the new paint isn't holding bad boards together. More on our exterior painting.
