CHIMNEY SIDING

Overview

A lot of North Texas homes have a framed chimney wrapped in siding instead of brick all the way up. It sits above the roofline in full sun, wind and rain, with nothing protecting it, and nobody sees it up close. By the time the rot shows from the driveway, it has usually been going for a while.

Usually it's just age. And it usually starts along the bottom, where the chimney meets the roof and the wood stays wet longest.

We replace the siding and trim, wrap it the same way we would a wall, and finish it to match the house.

Signs Your Chimney Siding Is Going

  • Paint peeling or boards looking swollen, especially near the bottom
  • Dark, soft or crumbling wood where the chimney meets the roof
  • Corner trim splitting or pulling away
  • Water stains inside near the fireplace (this can also be the flashing or the cap)

You can often see it from the yard with your phone camera zoomed in.

What We Replace, and What We Don't

We replace the siding and the trim. We don't replace the metal cap on top of the chimney. If yours is rusted or leaking, a chimney company can take care of that.

What Goes Back On

Most chimneys we re-side get James Hardie siding. It doesn't rot, which matters in a spot this exposed and this hard to reach. We also use SmartSide or vinyl, or whatever matches the rest of your house.

Behind it, the chimney gets house wrap with taped seams, the same as any wall we re-side. Hardie goes on primed and gets painted on site to match your trim. More on our exterior painting.

On Its Own or With Other Work

Chimney siding can be done on its own. It's also easy to fold into an exterior paint job or a larger siding project, since we're already there. No siding job is too small to call about.

More on Siding

  • Siding New siding, soffit and fascia, with the owner managing the job start to finish.
  • James Hardie Siding The most durable siding we install, backed by James Hardie's 30-year siding warranty.
  • Masonite Siding Replacement Masonite and other hardboard siding went on thousands of North Texas homes. We tear it off just about every week.

How We Do It

  1. We look at the chimney

Randy checks the siding, the trim and where the chimney meets the roof, and tells you what needs replacing.

  2. We pull the old siding

Rotted siding and trim come off. If there's rotted wood behind it, it gets repaired, not covered.

  3. We wrap and re-side

House wrap with taped seams, then new siding and trim.

  4. We finish it

Painted on site to match your home.

  5. We clean up

Everything we tore off leaves with us.

Chimney Siding Questions

01 Do you replace the metal chimney cap?

No. We replace the siding and trim. A chimney company can replace the cap.

02 What causes chimney siding to rot?

Usually just age. It tends to start along the bottom, where the chimney meets the roof.

03 What do you replace it with?

Usually James Hardie fiber cement. We also use SmartSide or vinyl, or whatever matches your house.

04 Can you do just the chimney?

Yes. No siding job is too small to call about.

05 Will it match the rest of my house?

Yes. We match the material and the color to the rest of the house, and Hardie is painted on site.

06 Do I pay anything up front?

No. You pay nothing to start. Fifty percent is due once the necessary carpentry is complete, and the remaining balance is due after the work is finished and any final inspection passes.

Every project is backed by our written workmanship warranty. If something isn't right, we come back and make it right.

08 Where do you replace chimney siding?
